Here are some great energy-saving tips for your home to help keep your heating costs down. Many of these tips also end up guarding your home from potential hazards. Follow these tips and you'll not only save money, but you might also save yourself an insurance claim.

1. Check that the damper is closed tightly when not using the fireplace.
2. Check the temperature setting on the hot water tank and adjust it accordingly.
3. Check to see if the water pipes from the hot water tank are insulated.
4. Clean or replace the furnace filter at least every three months throughout the heating season.
5. Turn thermostat down at night and when out of the house for extended periods.
6. Consider installing a programmable thermostat for the furnace.
7. Use caulking and weather stripping to seal air leaks around doors, windows and the attic hatch.
8. Use foam gaskets and childproof plugs to seal electrical outlets and switches.
9. Ensure that heating vents are open and not blocked by curtains or furniture.
10. Open the drapes/blinds and let the sun in during the day to help warm the home, then close them again when the sun goes down.
11. Windows account for up to 25% of total home heat loss. Consider installing storm windows, or new Low 'E', argon filled glass windows, or shrink wrapping your windows.
