What to do if you have a spill
Control loss and damage before you call your insurance company.
- Notify your local fire department in case there is danger of fire.
- Try to contain spilled heating oil with an absorbent material such as sawdust.
- Wear rubber gloves when handling oil.
- Turn off your furnace.
- Protect yourself and your family from exposure to oil fumes, which can cause health problems; try to close off areas where the oil was released.
- Hire a licensed professional to clean up the oil; the faster this is done, the less damage there will be to your property and the environment.
- If you have the oil damage endorsement, call your insurance company to make a claim.
