For exterior tanks, be sure that you look at the area surrounding the tank. Oil seepage can spread quickly in the ground. Look for signs of leakage, such as:

• A significant increase in your fuel consumption.
• Vegetation near the tank is dying due to oil seeping into the soil resulting from a leak in your oil tank that is connected to a heating system currently in use.
• Oil has seeped into the soil and contaminated a portion of your land.

What you can do for outside tanks: on your property

• Locate the tank away from any domestic water source.
• If you have a tank installed outside, be sure to protect it from snow and ice, falling debris from roof tops and trees, and any impact with a vehicle.
• Level outdoor tanks on a stable surface such as a concrete block.
• Outdoor tanks should be equipped with a vent alarm system. This device is installed on your tank where the air is vented. The alarm emits a noise while your tank is being filled; when the tank reaches its maximum volume, the alarm shuts off. This tells your delivery person that the tank is full.
